Overhead cranes in the workplace can really help keep things moving along. It can allow you to easily move items throughout your warehouse on a regular basis with ease. Although an overhead crane can keep things moving along inside of your warehouse, it can present a safety hazard if you don't know how to keep things safe.

Inspect Your Crane Before Using It

Every day, before you use your crane, you need to spend some time inspecting your crane before using it. Running through a quick check to make sure the hoist and crane hook are working correctly before you start to use it is one of the best ways to keep everything safe.

Remember to also test the lifting equipment that you will be using. You want to verify and make sure all the different elements that you use with your crane are working properly before you begin to use it.

Make Sure There Are No Obstacles in the Way

Next, you need to make sure that there are no obstacles in the way of the crane hook. Although the crane hook is placed on a pre-determined path, you need to make sure there is nothing in the way of the path. Make sure that nothing is sticking up, or hanging down, and will get in the way of the crane hook. You don't want the crane hook it hit or get caught on anything.

Always Know the Crane Limits

You need to make sure that you are aware of the weight limits for your crane. It is a smart idea to have the crane limits posted near the crane loading area so that everyone is aware of the weight limits. Before loading anything onto the crane hook, you need to make sure the weight of the item is at or below the weight limit for the crane. It is a smart idea to have a scale near the crane so you can weight loads before loading them up.

Move the Load Carefully

When it is time to move the load, make sure that the pathway is clear benefit the load. You never want to move the load over any people. Make sure everyone in the area is aware that a load is being moved.

The crane operator should keep the load steady and should not allow the load to swing. A swinging load is an unsafe load. The crane operator should also be focused on moving the load, and no one should interrupt the crane operator when they are working.

When it comes to using an overhead crane in the workplace, always inspect the crane and all related equipment before using the equipment for the day. Make sure there are no obstacles in the way of the load, be aware of the crane's loading limits, and move the load carefully. Taking these precautions will help keep your workplace and workers safe while using the crane.
